Brainstorming 2/28/2013

If I can change one thing about education it would be standardized testing in schools. Ever since world rankings have come into play our policy makers has had a weird and uncontrollable fetish about test results. It's just a multiple choice test on information that we have been dog and pony showed into taking. We rehearse more on how to bubble in four different options then on how those four choices really mean. Looking back we use to go through "test taking" workshops. Our education has resorted to teaching us on simply how to take tests and not function with the knowledge we gain.

It seems after every class you grind out rote memorization to get an "A" but never proficient at the topic. They coach us up from once we're able to hold a #2 pencil all the way up to college admissions on a couple of tests. Teachers forced to educate their students on only the test because it is the only choice to prove that they are indeed teaching our children. But it is not a remark on how much we have learned on the subject, but merely the performance we give on opening night that we've been dress rehearsing for our K-12 life.

If educators could build around their own teaching methods(you know use their actual skill they spent four plus years honing in higher education) instead of leaving it up to a board of local politicians. Let's let our teachers relish our students in their knowledge by using the mode that's best fitted for the subject. No longer should science be taught in a cinder block, windowless room but outside in the world where science lives and breathes. Students are far too institutionalized by a school that shouldn't be blocking the creativity, but inspiring it.

Compare and Contrast Essay Final

Jordan M Nichols
ENG 101:
Dr. Begert
2/19/2013 Paper 2

Education is an important right given to every citizen in the United States of America.  The educators are the center of every moving part in the education system. Teachers are given the daunting task of not only to teach children academics but also be there to set a standard and motivate our children. Apt abilities would include everything from being the subject matter expert and also in some communities being the only form of role model the child will have to look up to. Two teachers that come to mind are Mr. Escalante and Ms. Watson. Both these teachers have very common characteristics that set them apart from others in their field. The main difference between them is the level and social status where they taught. Mr. Escalante will be a poverty stricken community outside Los Angeles and Katherine Watson would be implanted into a college for women in an upper class social scene. Despite them being on opposite sides of social class, both these teachers had similar apt abilities and personalities to spark an influence in their students. These two teachers will provide their students with knowledge in an unrelenting fashion that proves their students were the main focus.
One of the most important parts of being a teacher is being able to show students how to use their knowledge and apply it to the real world. Mr. Escalante, portrayed in the movie Stand and Deliver, showed his students how to use mathematics in real life. Mr. Escalante would come to class with a cleaver and an apple and cut the apple in fraction forms. He then would pass the freshly sliced fruit to various pupils and quiz them on what fraction was left from the original apple. He also would take the students on a field trip to a workplace that had computers using higher levels of math. Ms. Watson also had a keen eye on how to teach out of the textbook by showing her students art in the real world. In the movie Mona Lisa Smile, Watson walks into her first class and shockingly realizes that the students not only read the textbook but already memorized the curriculum for her Art class. She would take her students outside the classroom and into various art galleries off campus.  This would be a new perspective to her students by teaching them how to consider modern day art instead of just the famous works in textbooks.
A much needed skill for a teacher of any kind is being a prime example the students can emulate. Most students need to look up to their teachers as being a good role model in the community or in their field. The lower class students in Garfield High School where Mr. Escalante taught were use to being let down and brushed aside by their community and teachers. Mr. Escalante would start to lead by example on how to be a better person in their community. In the movie it showed Mr. Escalante helping out with nightly English classes for immigrants and volunteering to teach his students higher math during the summer to help them prepare for Calculus their senior year in high school. During the scene in Stand and Deliver, it shows him collapsing from exhaustion during one of his night classes. He was so committed to his community he was willing to risk his health in the process. He would also not accept any violence or lack of discipline in his classroom. During the first couple of classes he would have run-ins with some of the student gang members where they would try and threaten him. Nonetheless Mr. Escalante stayed true to his values and wouldn’t give in to their demands despite the threats. He would also go in between two students fighting outside in order to show that fighting would not be accepted on the campus. Watson would also show an example that a woman had more to offer the world then just being a housewife. She was a single but also held a PhD in her field. She would try and encourage her students to go on to graduate school. She would always push her students to surpass the normal status-quo even though it was met with high disdain from her peers and students.
“Unrelenting” was a well-tailored suit that both teachers wore well. During a school conference where the faculty and teachers were determining how to keep East Garfield’s license, Mr. Escalante introduced a bold statement. He stated that the reason why the students were underachieving in academics is because the community and teachers placed them at that level. He suggested that if the students were challenged by their teachers and peers than they would gain the motivation to achieve higher academically. This was instantly met with sharp criticism from the school. Without the school’s recommendation, Mr. Escalante would trust his students’ yearning for success and set up his own summer school and higher math classes for them. Mr. Escalante had numerous opportunities to give up his intentions, but with each obstacle that tried to come between him and his students’ learning, he chose to blaze his own trail.  Ms. Watson would also be persistent towards her pupils. Class after class they would seem hesitant on becoming independent, but each time Ms. Watson would try to challenge her students to just “consider” new possibilities. During one of her trips outside the classroom to an art viewing, Ms. Watson showed them a new piece of art work. The giant canvas of colors just splattered on to the picture was met with a sudden disgust from the students. She would state to her students’ opposing eyes that they do not have to love or accept art but only “consider” it. These were strong words at the time and it directly corresponded to the situation for the girls. They didn’t have to love the idea of going against the expectation of marrying young and not starting a career, but they did have the right to “consider” the possibility and make up their own mind.
These two teachers would prove that no matter what the circumstance that providing a

pathway to education is the main priority. Escalante and Watson show that if you have

the right characteristics and love for education you can lead your students down a favorable

road. They did have their differences in the way they taught their students. One of the differences

is that Escalante used a very strict policy in his relentless battery of quizzing and making sure the

students showed up every day for class. Watson had a more therapeutic role with her students instead of the

stricter role that Escalante used. She would try to win their hearts by showing them how she was passionate

about art. There were a lot of opportunities that could have befallen our teaching heroes but with

each instance they proved otherwise. This could be the new standard for America. The standard would

be that our children need us to challenge them beyond the normal, and that no matter what the

child’s circumstance that education should be given indiscriminately and passionately to everyone, no matter

their circumstance.

Mona Lisa Smile Notes

Catherine Watson, a transplant from California, went to Wellesley College to pursue a teaching career. Her bohemian appearance instantly colliding with the conservative grays that met her at the train station. Being introduced to her future students brought a smile to her face but it was soon met with the weight of responsibility after hearing about the new rules for living at such a traditional college.

Hesitantly waiting to enter her first auditorium, you can sense of anxiety pulling through her veins. A bitter warning would preclude, "They can smell fear!" Instantly the class seems rather patronizing shouting out answers and Watson can feel the classroom steer out of her control. After learning all the students knew everything she prepared for them, the students and their wryly smiles would leave the auditorium.

After the dismal first class, the weight of failure will pile up after a bad meeting with her superiors. They would sit and tear her apart over her thesis and lack of prestige. Her other peers share with her that not all the staff wanted her at the position would add on to her feeling of isolation. Little hope would show itself in a couple of mismatch fellow teachers that reside with her.

Proving not to be shown up again by her "know-it-all" students, she would go past the syllabus. She would show a painting that will set a controversial discussion on art. They would go back and forth discussing the what makes art important. Finally, Watson feels like she sparked some interest in her pupils.

Proof of the conservative values the college holds to the utmost importance is the hasty firing of a tenure college nurse who was accused of selling contraceptives to the students. The college could not afford such a "liberal" image to the public.

Watson would try to inspire her students to pursue life outside of marriage. One of her students would confront her about a "C" she received. Watson would urge her to not only think more for herself but nudge the fact that there is life beyond marriage and that she should pursue her Law degree.

The institution would start to confront Watson over her use of too many modern art and her "unorthodox" teaching methods. This would fuel her fire to try to teach her students about thinking for themselves and to take chances and decisions even if they are not the "normal" ones.

Using Examples To Explain What Makes A Good Teacher

1. Mr. Escalante is an outstanding teacher for the main purpose that he expects greatness from his students and he's willing to go out of his way to enable them to succeed. During a conference meeting with all the teachers about losing accreditation  at the school, the administrators were talking about how low reaching the students were at their school. Mr. Escalante stood up to the board and stated that the only reason why they are not achieving academically is that the teachers were not doing their part and motivating them to become great. This proves that Mr. Escalante genuinely cared for the success of his students. He even went out of his way teaching the required prerequisites for AP Calculus during summer in order to teach it to them during their senior year. Even after the school told them that the facilities were only meant for remedial students, Mr. Escalante coordinated at a different avenue in sub par conditions to teach the students.

2.I think Dan Brown would whole-heartily agree that Mr. Escalante was a good teacher. Dan Brown states that, "Great teachers have strong relationships with students' families and engage in meaningful ways with the larger community." Mr. Escalante shows his passion by going to a student's place of work after she told him she couldn't take his class anymore due to working long hours at her father's restaurant. Mr. Escalante shows up at the restaurant and tries to persuade the father to let her daughter succeed in school. Mr. Escalante also went out to the community to help teach English during the night.

3.Sir Ken Robinson's criteria for being a good teacher is to go beyond the textbook and dreaded syllabus and inspire the students. He talks about how aged the education system is and how its extremely unfocused on the future. Sir Robinson believes that teachers today should look to find other means to gain the attention of students because not every student is made to learn from reading texts and listening to lectures. He believes that mathmatics and science is not the only aptitude for intelligence but also creativity in dance and the arts is shows a remarkable use of intelligence, also.

4. Sir Ken Robinson's criteria for being a good teacher is to go beyond the textbook and dreaded syllabus and inspire the students. I think Sir Robinson would both agree and disagree with some of Mr. Escalante's teaching style. Sir Robinson believed to instill creativity while trying to build a common ground for the students. Mr. Escalante would bring in visual aids just like in the time he brought a cleaver and an apple to show the students fractions. He also would use jokes and common everyday problems to help solve in the math class. Mr. Escalante was also very rigid with his rules in which Sir Robinson might not agree with. Mr. Escalante had a very disciplined, no excuses policy in which if you didn't show up for class on time don't bother showing up at all. This was shown when one of the students showed up late while taking his grandma to the hospital. Mr. Escalante didn't even acknowledge the student for a reason and immediately dismissed him from the class due to his tardiness.

Notes in Class 2/7/2013

"Now you don't grow up fat, Black, nearly blind, and ambidextrous in a West Indian household, particularly my parents' household, and survive without being or becoming fairly rigid fairly fast."-Lorde

Currently through etiquette school being boisterous, unkempt, and obnoxious at a traditional Southern dining room, especially the one in this conservative home, and live long enough to be a grown working adult.

"I afterward sold them to enable me to buy R. Burton's Historical Collections; they were small chapman books, and cheap, 40 or 50 in all." -Benjamin Franklin

Later I would hesitantly sell my 1st edition, jet black, and golden lettered record set in order to obtain rigid Black & Decker wrenches that came in a predetermined case that included 10 of different sizes.

Escalante

After reading Encyclopedia.com, they would note that during just two years at Normal Superior due to his exceptional skill at Physics and math he was called upon by his peers and students to start teaching Physics when there was shortage of teachers. Despite having no formal teaching lessons he mimicked the teachers he respected and started to teach on his own at the age of 21.

Encyclopedia will go on to state that, "When he graduated in 1954 he had three jobs lined up. In the mornings he taught at the prestigious San Calixto, in the afternoons he worked at National Bolívar High School, and in the evenings he taught at Commercial High School. It was through a lot of experience that Escalante developed his unique and effective teaching style."

Stand and Deliver Notes In Class

Mr. Escalante seen draped with a button up, cardigan and thick rimmed glasses commanding a VW bug with a surprised look as he coasts through the inner city. Watching poverty pan forward and back from his window like a carousel of the mocked American dream. He finally arrives at the school and notices a policeman instantly.  Noticed his job is irrelevant due to the lack of equipment. Classroom seems more like a bar hangout then a place for education. Startled and soft his voice began unable to control the students.  Half students can only speak Spanish.

After a long day of rowdy kids he finds that the unruly behavior has seeped from within the walls of the school to the parking lot as he finds his car window broken.  Trying to gain attention with the students, he opens up with a real life example of fractions that seem to amuse the students.  Two students try to test the patience of his authority by threatening his new takeover of the class.

While surveying outside he notices a fight breaking out. He quickly steps in to deescalate the altercation. He finds the same students in the next class. He refuses to leave them out the learning experience despite their threatening demeanor. He brings them into the group by asking them to answer questions and getting them to participate.

At a teacher meeting the staff criticizes the lack of literacy among the students and it is impossible to give them an education. He states that the students will rise according to their expectations.  Even if the students try to gain the upper hand he sets the control of the classroom. Three students try to refuse one of his daily quizzes and they agree to punish her by making her sit on a child’s chair. Even with his strict guidelines  he’s able to turn a passionate hand when a gangster wants to learn but not the stigma that comes with it. The teacher decides to give him more textbooks so he won’t have to be seen learning.

It cuts to the daily lives of the students and the hardships they must endure. It shows one student with children and working class parents and how it’s hard to find time to study.  Some of the students’ parents don’t want their kids to excel.
He’s willing to sacrifice a lot to give his students exceptional education. He implemented rigorous courses for the students. He started math classes over the summer all to prepare his juniors the chance to take an AP class their senior year. He shows dedication by working almost every hour in the day to give education to whomever is willing to learn. Everything catches up where he exasperates his own body one night in an evening English class.

Proof of proving ground with the students after an absence of work he returns with cheers and happiness. A total opposite of his first day when he entered the room there wasn’t an ounce of respect within the classroom walls. The students put their trust in his methods and due to his expectations decided to grow into the tall order that was given.

I believe the way he inspired the students to set the bar higher despite their social expectations was the best value. While every educator was set on doing the bare minimal for the kids, he was set on proving that anybody can excel as long as they show up. He held them to a higher standard believing that instilling great expectations from them will make them grow more in academics. I also felt that he was too disciplined and almost wouldn't take in the students account. He had his blinders on for their success and he would of been damned if they curved from the path in anyway. Given the environment in which the classroom was set this might of been a necessary evil in order to take the initiative. All in all it worked and they succeeded beyond the normal measures and set a foundation for their predecessors.

How Lorde Described Her Teachers

"My first grade teacher was named Sister Mary of Perpetual Help, and she was a disciplinarian of the first order, right after my mother's own heart."

Lorde interludes with this strong statement about the catholic teacher she encountered during first grade. A strong testament on how she ruled the class with a "iron cross" making sure not to hesitate spanking Lorde at any chance she was out of line. She even sent a note home to her mom urging her not to dress Lorde in multiple layers so she could feel the spanking. You get a mental image with her covered in the traditional garb and the hint of her hair color showed through her eyebrows.

She also talks about Mrs. Baker, the librarian, whom taught her to read. She describes her with "immense, light, hooded eyes and a very quiet voice" when she approached Lorde the first to read her a book. Lorde had great respect for her because that day her willingness to read her a story was the first time Lorde felt the motivation to read. Even though Mrs. Baker was not a teacher she took the time to sit down and teach the author the importance of reading while she read to her stories such as Madeline and Horton Hatches the egg.

Thesis Notes/ Sir Ken Robinson Notes/Brainstorm Ideas

I wanted people to understand the isolation of being in a foreign country and developing a skill to overcome it and it help it more ways than none. Being alone in a place without the basic communication skill can be hard and even harder to pursue the language without any formal studies. I wanted to show that all it takes is initiative and hard work to learn a second language and the benefits that come along with learning it. It showed that not only do you have the initial result of being able to speak to people and using it your daily life but it can carry on to other activities.

Sir Ken Robinson:

-Human Creativity
-Humorous
-Education is personal and important. Teaching kids about the uncertainty. All kids have talents but system won't develop them. Creativity same level as Literacy. Not scared about being wrong. "Be prepared to be wrong". Don't be scared to make mistakes. Always thinking about what is right and wrong can hinder passion and creativity. Dance and art are important just like mathematics. Schools on focusing on the "heads and not the bodies" of a person. System of public education only judges brilliance through work force related subjects. Education is diverse and dynamic.

Not one subject proves intelligence. Everyone is intelligent in their own way and the only way to incorporate that is to expand the educational caste system to nurture other bright minds. Public education is design to harness people's "distinct" gifts that could help society on a whole and not just for the industrial work force. Sir Robinson states the dire need to control the over inflated education process and left creativity flourish amongst the other bright minds in art, music, and dance. That those people are gifted and intelligent in their own ways and we shouldn't believe they are an academic inferiority.

I want to try and find teachers that are trying to pioneer different education systems and what they are doing to help develop a different type of education for the kids who don't "live inside their heads". I think the education system seems very archaic and it does nothing to help children that process information in different methods that they're forced to go 18 years through a system that would not benefit their academic needs.
